Overview
Tanzania’s Southern regions have always been a well-kept secret amongst those looking for a more exclusive or ‘off the beaten path’ safari experience. The national parks in the south of the country not only have far fewer visitors than their counterparts in the north, but they also are home to some of the largest populations of wildlife in Tanzania and arguably, some of the most stunning and dramatic scenery found anywhere in Africa. This eight-day Tanzania Southern Circuit  journey connects two of Southern Tanzania’s key areas into one seamless trip, these being Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park (formerly known as the Selous). For the intrepid adventurer seeking a diversity of safari activities and habitats to explore, this combination of destinations offers a range of safari options from walking and boating excursions in Nyerere to unrivalled photographic opportunities in Ruaha. Important: Luggage on the Serengeti – Arusha flight is restricted to 15 kg per person (incl. hand luggage) in a soft bag.
Highlights
  • Enjoy an exclusive and wild safari experience in a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is larger than Switzerland but home to just a few safari camps.
  • Make the most of the opportunity to enjoy a boat safari in Nyerere. Enjoy sunset drinks as you float past crocodiles on the sandbanks and pods of hippos in the shallows.
  • Enjoy a picnic breakfast in the bush after a morning walking safari or a romantic private dinner at the pool during your stay at Roho ya Selous.
  • Explore Ruaha National Park after dark from the iconic Jabali Ridge on a night game drive certain to captivate the senses under the cover of a starry night.
  • The epic and ancient baobabs contrast with the almighty Ruaha river and waterways creating spectacular photographic opportunities, with a specialised photographic vehicle available.

Itinerary

On arrival at Dar es Salaam Airport, you will be met by an Asilia driver who will transfer you to Johari Rotana Hotel. The rooms are large and comfortable with all the facilities you would expect of an international hotel – this property is ideal for a stopover before or after your safari.Overnight Johari Rotana Hotel

Today you will return to the airport for your light aircraft flight to Nyerere National Park, one of Africa’s greatest game reserves. You will be staying in the heart of the core game viewing area of Nyerere at Roho ya Selous. After settling into your room and enjoying a delicious lunch, you have a few hours to relax before afternoon tea and an afternoon game drive. The national park is home to a wide variety and high density of wildlife, making a safari here immensely rewarding.

Your days on safari offer plenty of flexibility, with a range of safari activities to choose from each morning and afternoon. Walking safaris are entirely different here from those to be experienced in Ruaha, exploring the miombo woodland environment with your guide. The boating safaris are superb morning or afternoon, watching wildlife come to the water’s edge to drink and getting close to bird colonies, hippos and crocodiles. You can also enjoy a spot of catch-and-release fishing, too. Overnight Roho Ya Selous

After breakfast, full day game drive in Nyerere National Park with picnic lunch in a bush and later return to the lodge for dinner and overnight Roho Ya Selous

You will start with an early morning walking safari with armed ranger, return to the camp for breakfast, then proceed with boat safari on Rufiji River and after lunch you will have a sunset game drive and later return to the lodge for dinner and overnight Roho Ya Selous

After breakfast you will be taken to the airstrip for your light aircraft flight to Ruaha, on arrival you will be greeted by your guide and taken on a short game drive to Jabali Ridge. The day can then be taken at leisure, with the option of an afternoon game drive. As evening approaches, it’s time to prepare for drinks and dinner or, if you prefer, the opportunity to search for the nocturnal residents on a night game drive.
There are several options for how your days at Jabali Ridge are structured, and your preferences will be accommodated wherever possible. Walking safaris are a great way to start the day exploring the environment on equal footing as the wildlife. Choose morning game drives or full-day game drives with picnic lunches or a relaxed lunch in camp with an afternoon game drive. The entire day could also be spent at leisure lounging by the pool and making use of the spa. Overnight at Jabali Ridge

After breakfast, full day game drive in Ruaha National Park with picnic lunch in a bush and later return to the lodge for dinner and overnight Jabali Ridge

You will start with an early morning walking safari with armed ranger, return to the camp for breakfast, and after lunch you will have a sunset game drive and later return to the lodge for dinner and overnight Jabali Ridge

After breakfast, pack your bags and say your farewells as you depart for your light aircraft flight to Dar es Salaam International Airport. Wave goodbye to Ruaha National Park and enjoy the delicious packed lunch from Jabali Ridge as you make your way to Dar es Salaam to connect with your onward travel.
